The role of the Russian Army is often minimized. They provided many more troops to the war effort. I don’t know they had the best tanks but they had plenty of them. And they lost many more civilians because of the invasion of the home land by German troops. The cold weather in Russia helped the Russians then as it did against Napoleon.
The take over of Eastern Europe after WW II wasn’t good for those citizens. Living under the threat of mutually assured destruction by the Soviet Union was the worst outcome of WW II.
We celebrate D-Day for a good reason. Our fathers and grandfathers willfully offered their lives to save the world from the Nazis. Victory in this battle gave America hope that Hitler and Germany would be defended. In spite of the flawed the planning, execution and post event fighting, the Allies were successful in giving hope for an eventual victory.
